Knife the first

I was whining a few weeks ago about having lost my favorite $5 chinese cleaver, with its lovely high-carbon blade and complex associations to Old New York. So this afternoon I went down to the basement with the dremel and came back up with this. This is a knife

The handle will be replaced by something real when I get around to it. The blade is from an old japanese pullsaw; this particular model claims to have a strip of tool steel welded to the edge, which is why I didn't simply grind that lovely curve until it was sharp. It's not quite as thin as the lost cleaver, but it has a real tang. We'll see how it goes.
