I have this friend...

No, really.

He's a writer, the kind I would aspire to be if I had that kind of commitment. His prose is just so good (because he worries over every word, almost endlessly).  But he lives in even more remote boonies than I do, and he's jonesing for some kind of comunity of word-lovers to keep him from going into withdrawal.

He's not particularly net-savvy. Is there a place any of you would send him, where people love prose, and where spending a morning worrying about whether to use a metaphor or a simile isn't considered the act of a deranged mind?

Many writers have LiveJournals and other blogs. Here's a linked list. I've hung around the fringe of a loose community of (mainly) SF/fantasy writers, because I got in the habit of reading papersky's friendslist back before I got my own LJ. I suggest your friend get a LJ, poke around to find some interesting LJ'ers, read their friendslists to find other interesting LJ'ers. There are many word-lovers here--finding them is not simple however.

I also would recommend the blog Making Light, which has a loyal following of literate commentors, who are apt to break out in poetry.

Thanks. I love making light. Only wish I had the time to read more than a fraction of the comments.
