Modularity sucks

I'm building a bed for C (a Big Boy Bed!) and it's taking forever. In part because I think too much. I have all the steps in the construction process mapped out, and every so often I get through another step.

A few weeks/months ago I cut the lumber to length and jointed two sides of each piece. Then I had to get the nuts, bolts and washers to mount my planer on the work stand (and take the chopsaw off) because the shop is too cluttered to use the stand the planer was on. Then last week or so I planed all the pieces square and the same two sizes. Only took a couple days. Would been longer if I'd cleaned the planer first.

Last weekend, I tapered the legs (using a shim and the jointer). Yesterday I set up the router with the edge-rounding bit (won't bore you with all the steps there) and today I finished the setup and actually rounded all the edges. Next step is to mock it up with the mattresses in place, so that I can cut the head and footboard pieces to length (but for that -- see cluttered shop -- I need the car out of the garage. Then it will be just a matter of some more routing and about  half a dozen other carefully-planned steps. Do you think I should use oil finish or poly for a kid's bed?

If I could just start the damn thing like a big-ball-of-mud developer and keep going until it was done, I'd be less elegant, but it sure would be nice to have it finished.

I think for a kid's bed, you should use poly.

Re: Modularity sucks
i'd use poly.

man, this sounds like me. except you make more progress faster. *sigh*. but without modularity i'd probably get even less done. small steps make it manageable for me. also, hey, i come from programming, and stepwise refinement is a way of life.

Poly it is, I guess.

And really, I'm not moving terribly quickly considering that C absolutely positively has to be settled in his new bed sometime in the next month and a half because his old bed will be occupied by someone else...

(I'm hoping to have it done by the second week in June, and might still make it.)
